Summer is here and so is grilling and barbeque season. While we tend to think of the winter months as comfort food months, the Summer offers its fair share of temptations. We always stress moderation at Our Urgent Care and never want our patients to miss out on celebrating with friends and family, so here are some of our favorite tips for making healthy choices at all of your Summer functions.

  1. Make sure that you do not arrive at a party or gathering starving. It is very easy to overeat or eat without thinking if you are in a state of hunger. Before you leave, make yourself a healthy snack of veggies and hummus, or an apple and nut butter to stave off overeating when you arrive. No time to make a snack before you go? There are plenty of bars that you can eat on the go such as a Lara bar, or grab a Greek yogurt on the way out the door.
  2. Choose no calorie beverages over sodas and sweet teas. This is a simple trick that adds up – in your favor. A can of soda packs about 140 calories! A simple swap that we love is a flavored sparkling water. The aisles of any grocery store are full of options these days.
  3. Fill your plate with veggies. Sides are the best part of the meal, right? But sides that are heavy on the mayo like potato and macaroni salad can add hundreds of calories in no time. Go for green instead. A green salad or grilled veggies are great choices. They are packed with fiber and low in calories, so they will fill you up but not tip the scale.
  4. Dessert! It’s everyone’s favorite – Fruit is nature’s dessert and when topped with some vanilla Greek yogurt not only is protein packed, but it is also yummy. Craving chocolate, a chocolate chia pudding is a great way to get your chocolate fix guilt free, and homemade fruit popsicles are not only delicious, but also a crowd pleaser.
  5. Finally, we know what you are thinking, what barbecue has salads and seltzer? And the answer is – any one that you attend! If you are headed some place where you know that the options to eat well will be limited, bring some along and you will be surprised by how fast they are gobbled up!

Remember – moderation is key, so don’t skip your Aunt’s famous peach cobbler, just make sure that you take a small portion and savor every bite!
